CIE 2014, International Conference on Lighting Quality & Energy Efficiency was successfully held from 23rd to 26th April 2014 at Hotel Istana, Kuala Lumpur. CIE 2014 is jointly organised by CIE and Malaysia CIE (MyCIE) and hosted by Standards Malaysia under the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI). Local Organising Committee Chairman, Engr Narendren Rengasamy delivered the welcome address, which was followed by the opening address by CIE President, Prof Ann Webb. YB Datuk Dr. Abu Bakar Bin Mohamad Diah, Deputy Minister of MOSTI who represented the Minister of Science, Technology & Innovation, YB Datuk Dr. Ewon Ebin, officiated the conference by hitting the gong. The conference opened with a keynote by YBhg Datuk Ir Ahmad Fauzi Bin Hasan, Chairman of Malaysian Electrotechnical National Committee. The keynote was titled “Promoting Efficient use of Electrical Energy – Malaysia’s Experience”.
Several top lighting experts were invited to speak at the conference including George C. Brainard, Tran Quoc Khanh, Thorsten Vehoff, Martine Knoop, Janos Schanda & David H. Sliney. CIE 2014 recorded the highest volumes of abstract submission compared to previous conferences. In six keynote speeches, 66 oral presentations and 87 posters experts from all over the world presented the latest research results and survey lectures on various subjects related to light and lighting.
The conference focused on the following topics:
- Daylight, Lighting Systems and Energy Saving
- Light and the Visual Perception of Quality
- Photobiological Effects
- Characterizing lighting systems
The 3-day event provided a conducive learning and sharing platform for lighting experts. It also offered an invaluable opportunity to have an intensified exchange and technical interaction among the lighting experts on the development of lighting in Malaysia and ASEAN as well as to discover the latest developments of energy efficient lighting technologies and standards. This conference also provided a unique opportunity for the worldwide community of engineers, scientists, and designers from the lighting industry, research organisations and academia to meet, present and discuss their work on light sources and lighting. Like the previous editions, this was a forum of discussion for all the experts and for interested people where new challenges and recent breakthroughs in the field have been presented during this conference. The presentation of the topics, the discussion and the exchange of ideas in this conference, acted as catalysts and trigger the generation of new and innovative solutions to on-going problems. The event highlighted new directions in lighting for commercial and public applications, both locally and globally and seeks to elevate public awareness of the importance of lighting quality.
Six workshops were organised in conjunction with the conference to provide a forum for information exchange and updates on this rapidly evolving technology. Each workshop received an overwhelming number of participants with an average of over 40 participants per session. The workshops covered different research topics namely on Measurement of OLEDs; Optical Radiation can be Good for People; Standardization and Art of Imperfection; Glare of LED Lighting Products; Colour Quality of Museum Lighting & Optical Radiation can be Bad for People.
On 23rd April 2014, a banquet was held for all participants as a token of appreciation for their involvement. The Cocktail function has provided a relaxed atmosphere for delegates to mingle and socialize. This function has been a vital networking opportunity for the delegates to meet new contacts & catch up with old ones while enjoying a refreshing beverage and light snacks. Besides, Gala Dinner has been a favorite part of the Conference for delegates and accompanying persons. A special photography session with unlimited shots, Henna Art & Batik Painting was hosted by MyCIE to showcase our culture and entertain the dinner guests at the foyer. While dinner being served, the delegates were entertained with cultural performance i.e. variety of cultural dance & gamelan music. Highlight of the event was CIE had the privilege to commemorate this unique and historic event with the launch of its new logo. The official logo was presented by CIE President, Prof Ann Webb.
Although deeply sadden by the recent MH370 misfortune, the conference was well attended by some 323 participants, of whom more than 80% were foreign delegates. The CIE 2014 attendee population included representatives from 41 countries (i.e. Malaysia, China, Japan, Germany, Chinese Taipei, Belgium, Egypt, Thailand, Hong Kong, Austria, Australia, USA, UK, Finland, France, India, Italy, South Korea, Singapore, Spain, Netherlands, Hungary, Sweden and etc).
Apart from the conference, CIE Divisional 2, 4, 5 & 6 Meetings as well as Technical Meetings (i.e. TC 1, TC 2, TC 4 & JTC 5) were also held concurrently from 28th to 30th April 2014. To encourage the local industry to participate more actively in the CIE activities, Malaysia has offered to host the CIE Division 2, 4, 5 & 6 meeting and Technical Meetings in Malaysia. The CIE Divisional meeting is developed to provide an international platform for information exchange and development of recommended practices related to the lighting industry. The Technical Committees (TCs) are established in each Division to work on a specific subject. Each TC consists of a small group of experts and is chaired by a TC Chairperson. During the Divisional meeting, members are being updated on the activities carried out and the progress of the relevant TCs. The said meetings drew 120 participants from 27 countries. A cocktail party was held on the last day to appreciate all the Divisional and TC members for their participation and great support to the success of the Conference and Divisional & Technical meetings.
MyCIE has had many congratulations on the conference, both locally and internationally. Malaysia was proud to be the first country in South East Asia to host this prestigious CIE event in this region. Due to the success of the conference, MyCIE plans to organise the CIE Full Term Session in 2019, and to provide an even more amazing experience to lighting professionals. Hence, MyCIE will continue to participate in international lighting forum, develop relevant standards and take part in liaison & technical interaction with other international organisations so as to improve the Malaysian lighting industry towards international best practices and standards.
MyCIE is proud to announce that the 3-day conference was a resounding success despite some shortfalls.
